About Refugia Projects

Refugia Projects is an emerging ecological design studio run by Tallulah Dods and Fabian Caley, based in the Northern Rivers of NSW. Until recently, we co-directed Greenhouse Studios Sydney, where we developed creative, community, and educational programs.

Our practice sits at the intersection of landscape design, art, and environmental education. We bring together experience in plant and environmental sciences, engineering, landscape architecture, community organising, and the arts.

We are a couple deeply concerned about the state of our environment. The ongoing degradation of water, soil, climate function, and biodiversity is alarming. In the face of this, remaining hopeful and active feels essential.

We find hope in the belief that urbanisation does not have to result in further ecological decline. Positive shifts in how we relate to nature in the built environment are critical to the survival of ecosystems everywhere.

We also know that plants and other people are our greatest allies in improving the capacity of urban spaces to support life.

So, we work with people and plants to create refugiaplaces where wildlife can persist and flourish as the environment changes.

We put these ideas into practice through creative and hands-on projects, including:

  • Ecologically informed landscape design and garden maintenance

  • Educational experiences and resources connecting people with local plant and animal communities

  • Art and design

Through this work, we try to contribute to a culture of active ecological restoration and more engaged relationships between people and local ecological communities.

We also create space for honest conversations about irreversible environmental change and offer opportunities to process ecological grief.

We’re always keen to explore new projects, partnerships, and creative ways to reconnect people and nature.

Fascinated by the natural world from a young age, I combine my technical training with hands-on experience in gardening, native plant propagation, construction, and field observation.

I design and create spaces that connect people with nature, blending aesthetic beauty with functional biodiversity restoration to care for and support local ecosystems.
